The Characters

Diodoros

Diodorus is a priest of the sanctuary—a Sellos—and he is taking a break from his duties in the marketplace.

He was originally an Athenian called Nikias; he fought at Marathon and was wounded—but then he was taken to court for not qualifying for a state pension. During this difficult time, he saw Zeus in a dream—and then came to Dodona to devote himself to the god. He changed his name from Nikias to Diodoros and became one of the Selloi.

His story is based on a question from the 5th-4th century BCE:

To which god should he pray and sacrifice so that his fortunes might improve?
